The Boys Varsity soccer team hosted the French-American school, and earned a 1-1 tie. After 3 strong games, Harvey came out flat, and allowed FAS to dominate the midfield. Our team was out of sorts, and just couldn’t get any offense going in the first half. FAS scored on a breakaway in the 28th minute to take a 1-0 into the half. During halftime, Harvey regrouped and came out fighting. The offense finally began clicking, and Jason O’Brien was able to score to make the game 1-1. Harvey continued to press, but the FAS keeper and defense made some great plays to preserve the tie.
On Monday October 1, the sixth grade class traveled to Ellis Island and Liberty Island as a conclusion to our studies on immigration. We arrived by boat, from the New Jersey side. When we saw how large the statue was, we were amazed.
Ellis Island was very big and a lot of people were touring it when along with us. We learned that when people arrived in America, they were hopeful but frightened. Most did not speak English, and most were very poor. The immigration buildings used to be located in Manhattan, but many immigrants fell prey to dishonest and criminal people who had easy access to them. The immigration center was moved to an island off of Manhattan to protect the immigrants from those that wanted to steal from them.
We took a tour with Tom Bernardin, a tour guide at Ellis Island. We went through all of the rooms, and learned about each one. There was a baggage room where people could put their suitcases, but most want to keep all of their belongings with them. (more…)
Overcoming a long bus ride and a sluggish first half, the girls extended their undefeated streak to seven games and prevailed over Darrow, 5-2. The only tally of the first half came off the foot of Carly Glenn following a well-placed feed from Molly Hord. Things heated up early in the second half as Regina Salice scored her first goal of the season with an assist by Lauren Judisky. (more…)
On Wednesday, October 10th the Harvey Junior Varsity Football team squared off against the Forman Junior Varsity Football team under overcast skies. The team was coming off a close victory at home against St. Luke’s. The teams seemed pretty evenly matched at a glance, but following the kickoff and a quick stop by the Harvey defense the Cavaliers quickly established dominance of the game through strong blocking from the offensive line (more…)
A wet turf and a slippery ball did not hold back the girls’ soccer team as they remained undefeated by besting host Wooster 3-0. Midway through the first half, Susannah Berry slipped a ball through the Generals’ defense to Nicolette St. Lawrence who promptly drilled the ball into the back of the net. With only 10 seconds remaining to play in the first half, Nicolette’s crossing pass found Dana Lombardi wide open for a second tally. (more…)
