Marcus Franklin may be new to the Harvey campus, but in the world of movie-making he’s a rising star.
In the recently released film “I’m Not There,” Marcus plays a young Bob Dylan. He described the experience as a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity that allowed him to work with world-renowned actors Cate Blanchett, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, Julianne Moore, and Michelle Williams.
The movie is an unconventional look at the life and times of Dylan. It depicts the singer-songwriter through seven stages of his life by using different actors and a variety of non-traditional techniques, much like the poetic narrative style of Dylan’s songwriting.

Students interested in learning the rudiments of Mandarin Chinese can avail of a new course being offered by The Harvey School Art Center Program in January.
The course will be taught by Daisy Rose, an instructor at the Northern Westchester Chinese School. It will incorporate the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) as well as Chinese culture and history. Hands-on projects in Chinese arts and crafts will also be included.
Ms. Rose teaches fifth-grade Chinese language as well as culture and history at the Chinese School. She also teaches eighth-grade Chinese geography, and has developed curriculum for the fourth, fifth and 10th grades.
The growth of China and the opportunities it holds for young people worldwide has resulted in an increase in Chinese studies. Knowing Chinese, says Ms. Rose, may give students an edge when applying to college and for those who want to major in international studies, knowledge of the language will be invaluable.
For more information, contact Ronald Romanowicz, the Art Center Program’s enrollment director, at 232-3161.

On November 14, in the quarter finals of the New England Class D girls soccer tournament (sponsored by the Women’s Western New England Prep School Soccer Association), the Lady Cavaliers played an excellent game, but came up one goal short in their bid to upset #4 ranked Providence Country Day, losing for the first time this season 1-0. In the first half, forwards Nicolette St. Lawrence and Dana Lombardi and halfback Madison Haller had several good scoring opportunities, but their shots went either high or wide. Meanwhile, the defense, led by fullbacks Erika Osborne and Yulia Josiger, kept PCD off the scoreboard and survived two hard shots off the goal posts to keep the halftime score even at 0-0.
Fifteen minutes into the final frame, a PCD shot ricocheted off Erika Osborne’s foot high into the air took a crazy bounce off the artificial turf, and popped into the net over the outstretched arms of goalie Clara Lefton. Pulling out to all the stops during the final minutes, the girls were unable to slip one by PCD. Despite the disappointing loss, the girls remain extremely proud of their undefeated regular season (10-0-2), their second consecutive HVAL championship, and their #5 ranking in NEPSAC (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council).
The Harvey School’s Lady Cavaliers captured their second HVAL title in two years by handily beating the Poughkeepsie Day School in the final game of the league November 7.
The varsity soccer team remained undefeated throughout the 12 week-season, ending with 10 wins and two ties, some of which were played against old rivals Marvelwood (8-0), Oakwood Friends (6-0) and Wooster (5-0). (more…)
