Harvey Hockey Tournament
The Cavaliers opened up the Harvey Holiday Hockey Tournament festivities with a 3-3 tie against KLHT on Friday. In the first period, the Cavaliers seemed to be in full control, popping a two-goal lead with scores by Ricky Schulman and Porter Williams. Both of these goals came on the power play.
In the second period, defenseman Tommy Pennisi also potted a power-lay goal on a feed from Erika Osborne.
Harvey next took the ice on Saturday to battle the Kiski School. Both teams were trying to establish puck possession and Harvey did a nice job of controlling the game at first. With the puck moving well during the first half of the first period, Sean O’rien scored back-to-back goals; one of them was assisted by Peter Sorenson and Osborne and the other cam e in an individual, short-handed effort. Kiski kept its composure, answering with three goals in the second half of the first period.
In the second period, Sean O’Brien scored his third goal of the game on another Sorenson assist. Unfortunately, Kiski continued to play hard and move the puck well, adding two more goals before the second period reached its conclusion. Sophomore goalie Ross Glickman was assaulted with 43 shots, often saving flurries of two or three before several of Kiski’ss rebound goals.
Harvey could not capitalize on its third-period chances and allowed Kiski to score a short-handed goal for a 6-3 win.
Hoping to salvage a tournament victory against the St. Thomas More team that they played so well agains the week before. Harvey jumped out to a two-goal lead with goals by Edelstein and Sean O’Brien. Brad Totonis and Greg Hennings assisted on O’Brien’s goal, indicating that more of the yourner players are stepping up.
Proving that it learned from its mistakes in the previous week, St. Thomas More stayed out of the penalty box and scored three unanswered goals during the last 20 minutes of play to score a 3-2 win. There were only five total penalities in the game, and in five-on-five play both goalies (Jason O’Brien for Harvey) gave their teams the support they needed.
Although Harvey did not earn a victory in the tournament, the tournament itself was ultimately a success. Each of the games showcased well-matched private school teams. It is always positive to see the school’s rink buzzing with good hockey.
