Spring Sports Preview
Softball
Coaches Maggie Hooton, Amie Phillips, Angelika Rinnehofer
Softball is all set for another successful season. While we suffered a significant blow with the loss of two seniors at the end of last season, we are thrilled to find the addition of no less than nine talented freshmen on our roster for this year! Kayla Mogrovejo, Carly Glenn, Sarah Hodson, Molly Hord, Alexa Marconi, Sarah Dowdell, Julia Parker, Victoria Shaffer and Rachel Dimowitz are more than “field ready” and raring to go. We have enough for a freshman team in practice and they are already holding their own against “the others”. We are also thrilled to have many current seniors bringing their experience to the team: Ali Walkup, Lauren Judisky, Clara Lefton, Brittany Fleiss, Leydi Lundeen-Goldschlag, Miranda Larsen and Rachel Camoia will return, along with sophomore Emmy Kaufman as lead pitcher and junior Erika Osborne as our outstanding catcher. Juniors Lauren Aiello, Laura Glass-Johnston, Noelle McKoy, Kate Urbach and Alisa Langer round out our experienced players while Rachel Chimblo, Carolynn Iskyan, Abby Hunt and Chrissy Casbarro are new additions. I am also delighted to share coaching duties again with Coach Phillips and new to softball Coach Rinnhofer who will be bringing along her camera to capture the highlights of the season. Obviously, with this roster, we are expecting an enjoyable and successful season led by our captains, elected by their teammates: Lauren Judisky, Ali Walkup and Erika Osborne.
Boy’s Lacrosse
Coaches Jason Hill, Nick Theberg
The Harvey School lacrosse team traveled to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina for spring training during the schools spring break. The trip was one of the most successful in recent history, allowing the team two practices a day with a scrimmage each night. The level of competition was high, with schools like Pingree, Blair Academy and Kiski. Our players were able to get used to working together and we improved as a team each and every day. During the day we had lovely weather and the practice time gave us ample time to integrate twelve new players into the action with our eight returning players. We are all excited about the upcoming season, and have high hopes for our team; our first game is home on Saturday April 5th against Hoosac please come out and show your support.
Girl’s Lacrosse
Coaches Brooke Morin, Robin Lewis
This upcoming season will be a rebuilding year with the loss of seven players from last season. The girls look promising with the addition of some new young players, including Catilin Costa in goal, Julie Sauro on attack, and Rachel Mendelsohn on defense. Returning players and captains Amanda Rubiano, Alison Hodson, and Dana Lombardi will continue to be anchors for the lady cavilers. Seniors Johanna Smith and Amanda Rubiano will be on both attack and defense, juniors taking the field for the first time in a number of positions are Chloe Corrano and Heather Rubin helping starting returning defenders Francesca Neri and Gabbi Bertone and starting center Carrie Seefeld. Freshmen Hannah Perrish and Susannah Berry and eighth grader Nicole Pugliese are a number of promising new comers, which will continue to add to the success of the program. This year we hope to continue to build off of last season.
Baseball
Coaches Dave Farshtey, Tim Halewicz, and Marty Bernstein
Cavalier baseball is anxiously awaiting the start of the new season. Returning players Porter Williams, Wolfie Lovell, Tommy Pennisi, and Jared Weinstein will anchor this year’s squad. Freshmen Tre Wilson, A.J. Bass, and Adam Slater promise to make major contributions to the team. Head coach Farshtey believes this is the most solid team in the last four years.
Tennis
Coaches: Walter Heitner, Tim Cornell
2008 promises to be another exciting campaign for the Harvey Tennis Team. 2007’s unbeaten regular season will be hard to match, but with Ben Shapiro & Robbie Reeder leading the way it may well happen! Co-Captains Gretel Coleman & Robbie Reeder will miss the experience of graduates Matt Horan, Reed Van Dyke & Brandon Brooks, but with Matt Bernhard returning from injury, and a crop of newcomers including Carlo Cevita & Justin Bernstein, the team’s winning ways will continue.__Walter Heitner
Rugby
Coaches Phil Lazzaro, Mark Brandon, Howard McManus, and Tom Feighery
The Rugby club is looking forward to another competitive and challenging seaosn. Led by tri-captains Grant Hewitt, Scott Oltman and Ben Boyd the team will once again compete in the Metropolitan New York Division I league versus perennial powers like Xavier, Greenwich High School, Keio Academy and Fairfield Prep. The team had a nine day preseason trip over Spring Break to Dallas, Texas. While in Texas the boys trained three times per day and were able to play one match versus The Canterbury Episcopal School. Harvey was victorious in the match by a score of 56 to 5. The team will work hard this season throughout and we look forward to the continued support of the school administration, faculty, and student body.
Middle School Lacrosse
Coaches: Matt Stark and Keith Reinhardt
The Middle School lacrosse season has begun and we’ve hit the ground running- literally. Before spring break players completed long distance runs, push ups, pull ups, and sit ups every other day. In between these “conditioning days” head coach, Mathew Stark and myself have been holding “sticks and gloves” practices down at Burnt Acres field. Coach Stark’s plan is to create “iron men” out of our team of seventeen players. Our team is a great size but must be in excellent shape to compensate for having seven subs and the ever-existing possibility of illnesses and injuries.
Coach Stark and I are happy to have the return of veteran players and the addition of some new players. We plan to teach beginner players the fundamentals of the game and to increase the present skill and game sense of all players. At this time we intend to have Jack Horan, David Shabshis, Benjamin Longson, Eli Galipoli, Philip Bowers and Alexandru Stan playing the position of attack. Charles Longson, “iron woman” Katherine Kowal, Thaddeus Sheehan, Mathew Castleton, William Geffs, Adam Lee, and Daniel Del Bello will be running midfield. Tyler Smith, Phillip Carter-Tracy, and Noah Vock will be our defenders and Brendan Bernegger will be in goal.
Coach Stark and I foresee a good season with a lot of fun, hard work, and growth. We encourage you all to come to our competitions and enjoy seeing the “fastest game on two feet.”
