Tim Cornell Attends Japanese Workshop
An Asian textbook publisher has recognized instructor Tim Cornell for establishing The Harvey School’s successful Japanese program.
Mr. Cornell received the award from the Boston-based publisher Cheng & Tsui during The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages Convention and World Languages Expo, which was held Nov. 16-18 in San Antonio, TX.
The conference brings together more than 5,000 teachers, administrators, method instructors, and students of foreign language, and features over 600 educational sessions on various topics, including assessment, culture, curriculum, literature, and technology.
“I was very honored to receive this award,” said Mr. Cornell, who has attended the conference twice before. “It is always a thrill to be recognized for one’s professional achievement.” Mr. Cornell said he returned with many new techniques, materials and ideas as a result of attending the event.
“The stimulus inspired me to try new things and grow as an educator,” he said. “Hopefully it will help improve the quality of instruction that I provide.”
The Japanese program at Harvey includes four levels of instruction, beginning with Japanese I, which introduces students to the language’s two phonetic alphabets, the Japanese culture, the acquisition of calligraphy skills, and learning Japanese songs. Subsequent classes focus on grammar and enhancing reading and listening skills.
